Travel Guidance: Impact on Placement Providers

The Scottish Government has recently issued new guidance regarding travel reimbursements for social work students on placements. According to this guidance, universities are advised to pay only for travel to and from the placement provider, excluding costs related to travel during the placement. This policy change has had significant implications for many of the third sector agencies partnering with Learning Network West to provide student placements.

Many third sector agencies that provide invaluable placement opportunities for students do not have the financial capabilities or mechanisms to reimburse students for their travel expenses incurred during placements. This change has raised concerns about the sustainability of continuing to offer these placements without additional support.

In response to these concerns, Learning Network West has conducted a comprehensive survey among its partner agencies to assess the impact of the new travel guidance. The findings highlight the potential challenges and financial strains that agencies may face, potentially affecting the availability and quality of placement opportunities for students.

The results of this survey have been compiled into a detailed report, which has been submitted to the Office of the Chief Social Work Adviser (OCSWA). The report aims to inform OCSWA of the practical implications of the new travel reimbursement policy on placement providers and to advocate for a reconsideration of the guidance or the provision of additional support to agencies.

As of now, Learning Network West is still awaiting a final response from OCSWA regarding the submitted report. We understand the urgency of this matter and are committed to keeping our partner agencies informed. Once we receive a response from OCSWA, we will promptly communicate the final decision and any subsequent steps to all affected agencies.

Learning Network West remains dedicated to supporting our partner agencies and ensuring that high-quality placement opportunities continue to be available for students. We appreciate the patience and understanding of our third sector partners during this period of uncertainty and will continue to advocate for solutions that address the financial challenges posed by the new travel guidance.
